Virginia Medication Aide Practice Exam

Becoming a Registered Medication Aide in Virginia requires clearing a prerequisite before you're even eligible for the 68-hour medication aide training itself, and there are four ways to satisfy it. The Virginia Board of Nursing accepts any one of:

• A 40-hour direct client care/care worker training approved by the Department of Social Services
• A certificate of completion from a Board-approved Nurse Aide program
• A current Virginia Nurse Aide (CNA) certificate
• A transcript from a Board-approved RN or LPN program

Whichever path applies, your 68-hour medication aide training needs to have been completed within the past two years of your application, older completions don't count.

The exam is administered by PSI, separately from your training program, a separate application and fee go directly to PSI. 70% is required to pass.

Your application demands more than an exam pass. A certificate of completion for your approved training program, a 5-page performance record documenting your competency, and a criminal background check through Fieldprint, the Board's designated vendor. Applications are now accepted exclusively online.

Prerequisite training, the 68-hour program within its 2-year window, the PSI exam application separate from your training application, the performance record, and the background check, that's a lot of moving pieces for what looks like a single linear process. Map out each piece's own timeline early, especially the background check, which can take real processing time.
